History of Labs

Although labs are mostly known now for being lazy, playful, and gentle friends, they were bred for other reasons. Some basic information about the Labrador Retriever can help you understand the history of these gentle giants with HUGE teeth. 

Bred to retrieve, labs use their bulky, muscular figure to handle game caught, or shot down by their owners. They are efficient using their deep bark that is intimidating to other animals, and even to unsuspecting people.

1980-Present

Labs can be, and are still used to retrieve, but this is not as common. Now, labs are mostly house pets and are very popular. Since labs have a pleasing personality and like to serve their owners, they are often used as service dogs. They are good at retrieving other people in times of their owner's need, retrieving medication, and alerting. They are the perfect blend of biological muscle machine, leader, retriever, and helper. Whether you're looking for a helpful house dog or a retriever, labs are it.

How labs came to be:

Labradors were bred in Newfoundland, Canada and were originally named the 'St. John's water dog' because they assisted fishermen. When these dogs were brought to England in the 1800s, they were called the 'Labrador Retriever.'
